A little while ago we received a submission of beautiful classic portraits by Joel Devereux. Not knowing the artist, but liking the work, we thought we had to do with a fashion or portraiture photographer. Little did we know that that was only the tip of the iceberg. Joel is only 22 years old but already a name that, when mentioned in a room of people, will make some look up or turn their heads. Based in Brisbane, Australia, Joel is an upcoming visual artist, photographer and producer.
Silent waters run deep. Not saying that Joel Devereux is a wall flower, but there is a lot more to say about this young Australian artist than just portrait photography. As a matter of fact, Joel attained his Bachelor of Creative Industries, with a major in Entertainment Industries and a minor in Visual Art, at QUT Kelvin Grove in 2013. Traditionally a painter, Joel has explored a wide variety of art forms over the years, including drawing, body art, sculpture, installation, film, photography, fashion and millinery. A highlight of his creative career in Brisbane was being invited to display work as a featured artist in the 2013 2High Festival at Brisbane Powerhouse.
As said before, Joel Devereux is also a producer. He co-produces a monthly Burlesque event known as Vanguard in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley and has produced many events in earlier mentioned Powerhouse, such as Boy & Girl and Sex with Strangers. Only having graduated in 2013, Joel's unique and irreplicable aesthetic has made him a prominent figure in the Brisbane art scene and landed him a firm spot among Brisbane's leading creative with a new solo exhibition named Hydra currently running. Oh, and did we mention Joel Devereux is only 22 years old?
Joel Devereux is a man of many talents. His work with David Tomasic is proof of that. Silent, subdued portrait photography of a quality you would expect to find with an artist who has been active for many more years than young Joel Devereux. And taking a trip through his website, discovering his many other projects, portraits, sculptures and burlesque photography it becomes abundantly clear we are dealing with a natural artist. A man with a high level of creativity, artistry and vision. Something tells me, this is not the latest we will see from Joel Devereux
